Should I Go to Urgent Care for a Nosebleed That Won’t Stop?

Nosebleeds are relatively common, but they can be alarming when they do not stop as expected when traditional remedies are applied. And if they keep gushing? Well… it may be time to seek urgent care.

Understanding Nosebleeds

Nosebleeds, or epistaxis, occur when the delicate blood vessels inside the nose break. This can be caused by dry air, picking the nose, an injury, or even less common reasons like high blood pressure or nasal deformities. They are most frequently seen in children and older adults, particularly in dry or cold climates.

At-Home Remedies for Nosebleeds

If you or someone else experiences a nosebleed, it’s important to handle it correctly to prevent further complications:

  1. Sit up straight and lean slightly forward to prevent blood from being swallowed (which can irritate the stomach).
  2. Pinch the soft part of the nose firmly for about 10-15 minutes. Do not pause and release to check if the bleed has stopped. Consistent, firm pressure helps the blood to clot and the bleeding to cease.
  3. Apply a cold compress or an ice pack to the nose and cheeks to constrict the tiny blood vessels and reduce blood flow.

To prevent future nosebleeds:

  • Keep the nasal passages moist with saline sprays or gels, especially in dry weather.
  • Use a humidifier in your home to maintain moisture in the air.
  • Avoid the urge to pick or scratch the inside of your nose.

Should I Go to Urgent Care for a Nosebleed That Won’t Stop?

While most nosebleeds can be managed at home, certain situations should prompt medical attention.

If any of the following should happen to you, consider visiting your nearest urgent care:

  • Bleeding that does not stop after 20 minutes of applying pressure.
  • A nosebleed following a blow to the head or a fall, which could indicate a more serious injury.
  • Frequent nosebleeds, which could be a sign of an underlying condition.
  • Nosebleeds in conjunction with a blood clotting disorder or prescription of blood thinners. These can complicate your ability to stop the bleed.
